About PDF Protect

PDF Protect adds a password to a PDF and encrypts its contents, so the file cannot be opened without the key. Permissions can also block printing, copying text, or editing.

It is the right choice before emailing a contract, a payslip, or an ID scan — the file remains a normal PDF, but the contents are unreadable without the password.

How to use PDF Protect

  1. 1

    Upload the PDF

Choose the document. It is processed once and never stored after the job.

  2. 2

    Set a password

Use a phrase you can share separately. Pick which permissions to allow, such as printing or copying.

  3. 3

    Download

The encrypted PDF downloads immediately. Keep the password safe — we cannot recover it.

Questions about PDF Protect

What encryption is used?

Standard PDF AES encryption with a password you set. Any modern reader, including Acrobat, Chrome and Preview, can open it.

Can I remove the password later?

Yes, with PDF Unlock, as long as you know the password. There is no backdoor if you forget it.

Does it stop screenshots?

No. Permissions discourage copying and printing in compliant readers; they cannot prevent a photo of the screen.

Is the file still a normal PDF?

Yes. It opens in any PDF reader, and the encryption travels with the file.
